Atari Vintage Games: ST Computers


Overview

Date Range: 1985 - 1992

Atari released the Atari ST in 1985 sporting the powerful 68000 processor at 8 MHz. All models included Midi and 3 channel sound with screen resolutions up to 640 x 400 and as many as 512 colours.

It was also the first computer to come with 1MB of RAM.

Later models sported a 4,096 colour palette, a blitter chip and hardware scrolling meant to better compete against the Amiga computers from Commodore.

The Falcon model included a 68030 processor at 16 Mhz, 65,000 colours and a top resolution of 640x480.

The Atari St computers sold well in Europe where they were popular as music and desktop publishing platforms.

Game Description: Dr. Kal Morrow has been kidnapped because of his research into genetics and the creation of human-animal hybrids. During the kidnapping, his family was brutally murdered by the terrorist organisation CHIMERA.

As his surviving son Saul, your quest is to avenge his family's death and seek out your father. Using your father's research, you become a wolf-man and sets out to find CHIMERA's base and defeat their leader Karl Draxx.

Collects enough power-ups to aide your quest, however, if Saul loses health, he turns back into his human form and only has his fists to fight the numerous enemies.

Game Description: Eleven years have passed by since Tom rescued his girlfriend from the clutches of the evil King. Word of Tom's journey soon spread throughout Wonder Land.

Eventually, the peace was broken when a ferocious fire-breathing dragon. Defenceless that they were, the people were quickly taken over and the tranquil and serene kingdom was transformed into a land of demons and devils.

Your mission is to defeat the dragon and once again restore peace.

You must travel through 12 locations. During your journey, use your sword to defeat the monsters. Recover the gold coins or bags of cash left from killing the monsters, which can be used buy better weapons, shields, armours and boots.

At the end of each location, are dreaded bosses which are difficult to defeat.

Game Description: Choose a team representing one of twenty-four countries around the world to participate in the World Championship tournament. Once your team is picked, select which players to have on the field.

The game supports single exhibition matches, either against the computer or against a friend.

Game action is viewed from above is rather simplified as player control is limited to players closest to the ball. Among the rules missing from the game are rules causing penalty flags and offsides.

Game Description: After a distress call was received from a space station orbiting your home world, then complete silence. However, a single ship managed to leave the planet. The pilot tells a tale of pods that hatch into acid-spitting Xenos.

A small band of engineers were dispatched to combat the Xeno threat before it takes over all the space stations and, eventually, your home world. Assemble your band of engineers and fight the Xenos on each station, striving to either clear it or abandon it.

You start out with a standard issue laser but can use any weapon that you can find. Keep an eye open for Phasers, Lightning Rifles, Poofer guns, and bombs.

Game Description: Xevious was a scrolling first-person shooter, and while a common game form today, was a new style of game play in 1982. Coupled with the graphics and game play, Xevious became very popular in arcades and was soon ported to all the popular game consoles and home computers of the time.

Game Description: Zero 5 is a wild space-shooter where you are in control of a small and manuverable fighter craft or a powerful warship.

Your mission is to defend the earth from alien attack over dozens of missions where you travel through deep space to meet enemy convoys head on and shoot across asteroid and planet surfaces taking out installations.

The game includes three play modes:

1) HIT-PAK Mode is like a variation on the Missile Command 3D VR mode where you are in a turret with four guns to blast everything in sight such as asteroids. There are no power-ups in this mode.

2) BAMBAM Mode consists of piloting around in your fighter shooting every object that moves in 360 degrees. Power-ups are available in this mode.

3) TRENCH Mode is a Star Wars style shooting where you fly your fighter through a trench. Power-ups are available in this mode.

Game Description: You are Zool, a special ninja.

You goal is simple: run and jump, climb walls and shoot your enemies. Obtain power-ups to make your goal easier to achieve.

In the options you can change the difficulty and the game-speed two times, the continues and the background music (Rock or Funk).

Game Description: The Zork Trilogy is a compilation distributed by Infocom of all three games:

Zork I: This is the first game in the trilogy that started it all. You are introduced to the Land of Quendor and begin with your Elven sword and an old brass lantern. Battle the Thief and the Troll and outwit the Cyclops as well as sail the mighty Aragain River.

Zork II: The Wizard of Frobozz is a senile mage who can only cast spells beginning with the letter F. Your mission is to obtain all three orbs and free the demon.

Zork III: Zork III ties up the loose ends left by the first two Zorks. The purpose for being in Quendor is revealed.
