Atari Vintage Games: ST Computers


Overview

Date Range: 1985 - 1992

Atari released the Atari ST in 1985 sporting the powerful 68000 processor at 8 MHz. All models included Midi and 3 channel sound with screen resolutions up to 640 x 400 and as many as 512 colours.

It was also the first computer to come with 1MB of RAM.

Later models sported a 4,096 colour palette, a blitter chip and hardware scrolling meant to better compete against the Amiga computers from Commodore.

The Falcon model included a 68030 processor at 16 Mhz, 65,000 colours and a top resolution of 640x480.

The Atari St computers sold well in Europe where they were popular as music and desktop publishing platforms.

Game Description: Bram Stoker's Dracula is based on the 1992 film of the same name.

Gameplay varies greatly from platform to platform, but they all retain the same plot based on the movie: You control a young lawyer named Jonathan Harker. And as Harker, you must free yourself from Dracula's capture, then follow him to London and end his reign of terror.

Game Description: Your beloved was kidnapped by a spaceman. Your mission is to recuse her while battling the sea of the enemies with only bombs at your disposal.

The magnitude of the bomb's explosion increases with upgraded, however, should you die, it resets and you you loose your previous skills. Moreover, some updates allow you walk through the walls, increase your speed and give you some other assets to aid you in your quest to save your beloved.


Game Title: Bonanza Bros.

Game Description: Your job is to collect items that have been placed inside various buildings in order to test the security force. If you return the items successfully, you will be rewarded.

You only have three minutes to complete your tasks, which is made more difficult because the building is packed with security guards.Use your guns to knock the guards unconscious .
You must collect all the treasures before leaving the ten buildings and shoot any security guards that get in your way. There is a bonus stage after three buildings where the object is to collect gold bars in a limited amount of time without one of the three spotlights shining on you. If you collect all the gold bars, 10,000 points is added to your score.


Game Title: Boulder Dash
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: You're Rockford and have to dig through monster infested caves in search of diamonds.

Once you have collected the right amount of diamonds, you progress to the next stage.

Squash your enemies with falling boulders that are released when the ground below them is removed or they are pushed onto empty ground. Be careful because these can also squash you.

Game Description: Brian Clough's Football Fortunes is a football management computer board game suitable for two to five players.

You play the role of a club manager and must manage your team through the season using skill to make your team stronger and win games.

Game Description: This is a real time all-text game where you play the role of Sir Gawain, a knight of the Round Table. The game is played using the third-person.

You are trapped in the underworld of Ulro where you must learn five magic words in order to escape.


Game Title: Bubble Bobble

Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: Bubble Bobble is the story of Bub and Bob after wandering into the mysterious cave of monsters and magically turn into dinosaurs. You can transform back, but must leave the end of the cave for this to happen.
Bubble Bobble is a multi-platform game, with each level having a single screen. The real power Bub and Bob is the ability to blow bubbles. Use these bubbles to leap on or to trap enemies. Enemies trapped in a bubble must be popped by jumping into them, wherein they will turn into yummy fruit.

Clear the level of all enemies to proceed to the next level. Taking too long to complete any level will summon Baron Von Blubba, who will float around the screen trying to destroy you.


Game Title: Bubble Ghost

Game Description: Blow a bubble and guide your character to direct the bubble through the gaps in each room. The bubble's direction is affected by which part of the ghost hits it. Sounds odd doesn't it, look at the pics and it will make more sense.

Oh, watch out for obstacles like candles and fans.


Game Title: California Games
Game Type: Sports
Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: California Games follows the same format as the summer and winter games. Events included are skateboarding, footbag, surfing, roller skating, flying disc and BMX. California games supports multiplayer and single player modes. Though the game is best enjoyed with friends.

Like previous Epyx games, Summer Games is just as addictive.


Game Title: Cannon Fodder
Game Type: Strategy
Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: Guide a team of up to four soldiers through 72 levels of combat in this innovative top-down action strategy hybrid. In fact, Cannon fodder was so popular it has been ported to many game console and computer platforms.

The characters are controlled indirectly using the mouse, as you activate each soldier or group of them by highlighting them. Your characters can cross water of any depth, but cannot shoot while they are swimming. The good news here is that the enemy also cannot shoot while swimming.

You can also pick up grenades, which can be used to destroy groups of enemies or buildings. In fact, grenades are the only way to take out buildings.


Game Title: Chambers of Shaolin
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: The game consists of two parts:

1) Train your character in the various chambers of Shaolin. Each exercise includes balancing on trees, kicking a pendulum and dodging objects. Improve your stamina and strength by performing these exercises and you will do well in part 2.

2) Fight your way through your opponents and advance level by level by successfully beating your opponents.


Game Title: Chase H.Q.
Game Type: Racing
Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: Your mission is to patrol the streets as an undercover agent and track down five criminals. Pay attention to the mission briefing before starting off. Your briefings will give you valuable information such as what car the suspects drive.

Avoid crashing in to other cars while you search for the suspect. Once you catch up to the other cars, bump into them until your car is no longer functional. All this must e done under a time limit so keep an eye on your time. However, once you've caught up with your suspect, you are granted more time.


Game Title: Chase H.Q. II: Special Criminal Investigation
Game Type: Racing
Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: Three girls have been reported missing. Among the missing girls is the Mayor's daughter. Once again, you must track down five vehicles, which are covered in the mission briefings.

Using a Dual overhead cam V63000CC Twin Turbo Engine, five sets of nitro-fuel boosts and a gun attached to the steering wheel, patrol the streets and find these vehicles.

The game-play is similar to Chase H.Q. with a few differences. Cars travel in both directions instead of one and some will catch up to your car and shoot at you. A helicopter drops grenades to damage your car and a guy on a motorcycle will also throw grenades at your car. And most importantly, shoot at the target vehicle rather than just bumping into it.

Remember, there is a strict time limit so don't waste any time.


Game Title: Chuck Rock
Game Type: Action

Game Description: Chuck Rock is your average Joe, caveman style. Joe likes to spend his Sunday afternoons watching football and drinking beer. Unfortunately for Joe, his wife, Ophelia Rock, is kidnapped by the village weirdo, Gary Gritter.

As Joe, you must rescue Ophelia. In doing so, you must fight a variety of dinosaurs using his belly-buster attack and a jump kick. Occasionally he has to pick up and throw rocks to defeat enemies and allow him to jump to greater heights.


Game Title: Commando
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: Another popular game from the 1980s.

Fight through several levels in this arcade conversion. Armed with only a standard rifle and a few grenades, take on the hordes of Nazis. Some are wandering around in the open while others have picked out hiding places, which you must approach from certain angles.

Use the trees, rivers and bridges when developing your combat tactics. Be sure to collect grenades and always have a few ready as they will become life savers at critical moments.

Game Description: You play Frank Harris and your task is to stop Holli Would from entering the real world.


Game Title: Corporation
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: This first person shooter requires you to think things through rather than just attack anything that moves.

This game preceded Wolfenstein 3D by a number of years and while the walls were not ray cast, but solid fill polygons, it was still one of the earliest simulations to tackle a human viewpoint with complete 360 degree freedom of movement.


Game Title: Crack Down
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: Crack Down is a time-limited action game. You play Ben and Andy. You must get through the levels quickly by placing bombs scattered around the level. However, the levels are heavily defended. You have an array of weaponry including a cannon, machine gun and superbombs to protect yourself.


Game Title: Crazy Cars III
Game Type: Action
Game Generation: 16bit

Game Description: The game offers many great cars at wild discounts including your starting out car that is the basic Lamborghini at $6000. Your aim is to rise to the top of the four divisions of racing through success on 60 racetracks across America.

When the police are in the area, speeding beyond 110km/h could see you branded as an offender. This is bad as it will get the police after you, trying to run you off the road.

Each race costs money to enter so your earnings can be boosted by betting on the results with the other championship drivers. Lots of power-ups can be bought along the way including tires, radar jammers, engine improvements and nitro boosts.
